Annelize van der Merwe

Annelize van der Merwe is Director Green Economy in the Investment and Spatial Industrial Development branch of the South African Department of Trade, Industry & Competition (thedtici).  Ms van der Merwe is responsible for acting as the point person for foreign and domestic investment in the green economy in South Africa.  

Since April 2018, Ms van der Merwe has also been part of the secretariat supporting the work of the President’s Investment Mobilisation Drive to raise $100bn in 5 years and on the core team organising the SA Investment Conference.  She is also part of the secretariat of the President’s Advisory Council on Investment.

In her role as Director: Green Economy, Ms van der Merwe has been instrumental in attracting and securing key investment projects in various green economy subsectors including renewable energy and the waste economy and works closely with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in facilitating investment for the sustainable development goals.

Ms van der Merwe has a career in international trade and investment spanning more than 20 years.  Prior to joining the dtic she worked for the British and Dutch governments, promoting trade and investment relations between South Africa and these countries. 

Ms van der Merwe holds a Masters degree in Economic Policy with a specialisation in Trade & Industrial Policy and is an alumni of the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences-Po) in Paris, France.
