Producers and brand owners of electrical and electronic goods will have to take financial and operational responsibility for the end-of-life management of all energy generation and storage equipment placed on market. All stakeholders involved in this sector, including the producers, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers, are responsible for ensuring that the sector waste diversion targets are achieved.

For many years, the collection, recovery, and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment within the energy sector has been voluntary and largely driven by the Private Sector. Without mandatory conditions, South Africa’s waste electrical and electronic equipment recovery rate at end of life needs improvement.

Energy Storage Chapter

SAIEE image

The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) hosted a two-day webinar series titled Unlocking and Enabling Storage as a sector for South Africa.

Due to growing concerns about the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and the capacity and resilience of energy grids around the world, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions.

For this reason, the SAIEE launched the Energy Storage Chapter. Knowing that energy storage can help address the intermittency of solar and wind power; it can also, in many cases, respond rapidly to large fluctuations in demand, making the grid more responsive and reducing the need to build backup power plants.
